What does it do?

Expense tracking application for Windows Mobile

  • Enter your day to day expenses on a windows mobile powered device
  • Categorize your expenses
  • Add notes to entries
  • Create customizable reports (see examples)

Keep your data safe with password protection and data backup. Export reports to a comma separated file for use in other programs.

Expense Control Version 2

New Features:

  • There are two levels to categorize the expenses which will allow to manage expenses on multiple categories like for example - Personal, Business, Project A , Project B etc. Each one in turn can have it's own sub-categories.
  • Diary: Enter and retrieve your diary notes on your mobile anywhere without the hassles of carrying around another diary.
  • Future Expenses: To remind you of future and recurring expenses and add them quickly
  • "Total Amount" ticker on home page: Get total amount you are spending right on the home page itself. Configure this to get the report you want.

Bug Fixes:

  • When editing a expense, the notes field will not set to "Edited"
  • You can now download the application from your Windows Mobile browser itself

Expense Control Version 1.1

Enhancements:

  • Now enter expenses in decimals. Keep track of every cent you spend
  • Import the expenses from a Comma Seperated File (.CSV)

We have also fixed a few bugs that you found. Thank you for helping make this better.

Requirements

Windows Mobile 6.0 powered device with screen resolution of 240 x 320 or above.

The application has been tested on these devices:

HTC P3400i HTC Diamond HTC TyTN ii HTC Touch
HTC P3400i HTC Diamond HTC TyTN ii HTC Touch

Please let us know in a comment below if you install this on another phone so we can add it to our list.

Installation

After downloading the app you can either:

1. Use Active Sync to install on your phone

2. Copy the cab file onto your memory card and run it on your phone

Upgrade Instructions

If you have installed Expense Control version 1.0, then follow the steps below to upgrade to the latest version. Note that data already saved will not be lost.

Before you upgrade please take a backup of your data file by going to Menu->Data File->BackUp Data File from home page.

  • Close the app on the phone if it is already running
  • Uninstall Expense Control from remove Programs
  • Install the new version

Note: You can also directly start the install of the new version, which will in turn uninstall the older version and install the current version.

To get back all saved data

  • The data you enter through Expense Control gets saved in a separate data file. This file is not deleted when you uninstall or upgrade the app.
  • After installing the new version, from the menu item choose Data File > Open Data File from the home page. Enter correct password. That's it! You have all the data back in place.

Was wondering whether this has been used by some mobile companies...I own a Nokia 3500Classic, and it has a budget and expense control application.

This is quite an impressive application. It gives me a good feeling to see many such created/developed by people like us.
Have a slight query though, has this been licensed/used by some mobile companies...I own a Nokia3500 Classic, and it has an inbuilt application for tracking and keeping a tab on budgets/expenses?

Hi Oliver,
It is really nice to hear that you are using it for the past one year!!!
Although there is no direct way as of now to view the sdf file in Excel, there is a functionality already built in to export the data ands view in Excel. Here are the steps to do that:
1. From main Menu choose Reports
2. Select any of the existing reports or create a custom one to view the Report
3. From reports View, select Menu > Export this report
4. Give a name for the file, Select the folder where you want to export and choose the location where you want to export (Main memory or storage card)
5. Click Save
6. A new file with the name you specified with an extension "csv" gets created in the location you specified in step 4
7. Now, you can transfer this file to your pc using any method like using USB or bluetooth.
8. You can open this file now on your pc using excel to see the reports in Excel.
Let me know if these instructions helped or if it is not clear.
Also, I would like to hear from you what can be improved on this app?

Hello Naren,

I have tried sevarel options, but i have managed to get my info to the excel tabel.

I have one more question, i have upgraded my htc touch to 6.1 windows mobile and now i can not run your application no more. It always finds some unexpected error.

I realy do not know how to install your wonderfull program on my phone.

Have you encountered something similar?

Nice apps, tried it on my Touch HD but if I made a mistake when entering information and try to delete it I get an error eg, I start expense ctrl goto menu/report/current month. select transaction got menu/del sel expense. error detail heading is ExpenseControl.exe NullReferenceException at about 9 different places to much to write

Expense Control v2 installs and runs fine on a Palm Treo 750w, with Windows Mobile 6 and a 240x240 screen resolution. EC v2 installs and runs fine on the Memory Card.

To install, use ActiveSync to copy the CAB file download to your device. Then use File Explorer to locate and open the CAB file. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the install.

You will need to use the stylus or touchscreen to advance fields and choose from picklists or menus.

You will need to use the stylus/touch screen to scroll left/right or up/down to see parts of the screen that are not visible, but which would probably be visible on larger res screens.

Hey Naren - any chance of auto-detect 240x240 screen support in the next upgrade, so we don't have to scroll? Also, support for field advance with 5-way button or similar would be a nice addition because it would permit single-hand entry.

Awesome program !
I had actually asked a ProAdvisor Rep if something like this was in development. Thank you for getting this started. As a self employed Accountant, in todays mobile environment, I generally have a half dozen debit card expense receipts falling out of my wallet. As an Accountant, I understand we need to keep these receipts, but I also find it a pain to enter these into quickbooks "after the fact". I'd rather enter these expenses into my Quickbooks company file "on the go" or "at the source". I envision entering the expense in my Blackberry or Windows mobile device, using a program such as this, then "syncing" the expenses into my Quickbooks directly from my mobile device periodically, thus eliminating double entry. I think we'd need the "chart of accounts" and perhaps the "vendor" and "other names" file from Quickbooks, synced into the mobile device. thank you again

Hi, I just tried this application on my HTC TyTn II running Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro (CE OS 5.2.20757, build 20757.1.4.0)

Unfortunatly the application doesn't want to work for me...it crashes with an error on startup (after entering a name/password) and if I hit cancel it crashes on the next screen.

The error is:

"An unexpected error has occured in ExpenseControl.exe. Select quit and restart

File or assembly name 'System.Data.SQLServerCe, version 3.0.3600.0, culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken='3BE235DF1C8D2AD3', or one of it's dependancies, was not found."

Just thought I'd let you know!

dot (.) in number forces error 'Amount should be numeric'. In regional settings in WM is comma (,) as number separator. I think you don't mind these settings when saving number, so error occurs.

I would also say that the other issue on edit is that it always defaults the date to the current date unless you physically reset it again before save. The current date should only be set on new entries rather than edit.

A new field in the form would also be useful called project. This would enable you to assign expenses to different projects if required.

Yes, the date filed should not be reset to current date. I will get that fixed as well.
Regarding the "Project" field, I need to look into the use cases to make it a feature useful for most users if not all.
If we have two levels of category, say "Category" and "sub-category", that might solve the purpose. Let me know if you would like that.

A status for the expense would also be useful.

There appears to be 3 states for an expense that would be useful to report on.

The Expense is either outstanding/claimed/paid.

Some way of marking these states in the app would be very useful

Nice to see the notes are no longer reset on edit, but we still have the issue with the date of the expense being reset when editing.

Perhaps you could allow a double tap on the expense list to open a view window as it is difficult to see all the details of the expense in the report mode.

Sub category a great introduction. Keep up the good work.

Hi there, I cannot gather whether this is supposed to work on smartphones (i.e. non-touchscreen devices, WM6 standard)

I tried to install on my Samsung i600 WM6, and it installs, then when launching the application it gives me an "exception" warning.

I tried quite a few times, to no avail.

The app works only on WM 6 Professional edition. There are few controls that don't work on WM Standard edition. I don't have a timeline, but I will get this fixed for sure.

On my AT&T;Tilt with the stock WM6.1 update, I'm having trouble running a report. I'm getting a "boolean error" message. Perhaps this isn't compatible with 6.1? I've tried deleting and reinstalling without success.

I really like the concept and design but it isn't working properly for me.

You need to download and copy the "ExpenseControl_Ver1.cab" file on to your mobile device. From the device browse to where the file is located and click on it to start the install. Let me know if that helps.

Naren,

I liked it very much and impressed by the way you paid attention to each of the menu items.

Few thoughts that strike my mind at the first look:

Should not the ‘Future Expenses’ menu be named as ‘Expense reminder’?

The expenses that were already over can not be part of future expense right?

Also one more thing, Will the completed expenses in the ‘Future expenses’ menu be automatically moved to the general expense report?

It would make the product an extraordinary one (already it is!), if we can have a ticker (Just like time display) in the screen which tracks the expenses of the current month.
Just not to find fault, was just curious to add value addition to the very useful end user product.

Please correct me if any of my suggestions are irrelevant or already in place.

You are correct. I too thought of calling it Expense Reminder. I did not do so only because it is not going to remind the user of the expenses. Only when we go to the menu item "Future Expenses" we get to see all the future expenses. It is used to set future/recurring expenses like house rent, monthly loan emi etc.
Yes, from the future expenses page a user can choose to enter it as a confirmed expense by choosing the option "Enter Expense". He also gets the option to change any of the expense details like amount, notes, payment mode etc. before he saves the entry.
